When Technical Turns Green: Flying 101

Kulula airlines has the whole "technical design turned fun" thing right with this plane design, titled "Flying 101."

Highlights:

The planes are covered with some hilarious details about the plane, such as the captain’s window — the big cheese, the fuel tanks (the go-go juice), to the loo (or mile-high club initiation chamber), and the black box (which is actually orange).

Hope you enjoyed these as much as I did.

Facebook Places Logo: A 4 in a Square?

note: Anyone else find it funny that there is clearly a "4" in square for the logo?

How Green is Your Font?

In an effort of true green font proportions, font fans Matt Robinson and Tom Wriggelsworth decided to draw out large scale type of popular fonts to measure the total ink usage.

As a measurement/six sigma dork, I am loving the data visualization piece of their effort… they used the remaining ink in the ballpoint pens as their means to measure to the total amount of ink used in the experiment.

As you could probably guess, IMPACT scored low “green” marks while the comparatively lean Garamond and Courier were at the top of the class.

Rambling/Tweeting Every Step You Take

They’re shoes.
They tweet.

So, these crazy sneaks, developed by Ricardo Nascimento and Tiago Martins, use the Twitter platform to ACTUALLY tweet every breath/step you take (tthanks sting)

Are they being serious?

Basically, it’s making fun of us for posting “every step we take” on twitter, foursquare, and the various other places we share details of our lives. (yes, I’m guilty too…)

How does it work?

A sensor embedded under the sole detects when the wearer is walking. Then, the info is sent via bluetooth to a mobile phone that makes the postings on Twitter.

When the sensor detects a certain amount of pressure, the word “step” is posted. For the other moments the “.” symbol is posted. Following these postings one can know if the wearer is walking or not and also predict his speed.

What’s next?

Look for continued integration of technology and our physical “stuff” (clothes, shoes, etc.) Most of what we buy now is designed to “integrate” with our devices (think iPhone, blackberry pockets), but as component costs continue to decrease, people are going to have more fun experimenting…
