They multitask. talk. walk. listen. talk. text. The “Millennials” are coming.
While watching a presentation a few weeks ago, a friend of mine integrated part of this 60 minutes special on “Millennials” (aka us). I laughed so hard that I started to cry. It’s hilarious. And maybe a little disturbing.

How can you not laugh when someone seriously says, “They are enormously clever and resourceful. Some of the others are absolutely incorrigible. It’s their way or the highway. The rest of us are old, redundant, should be retired. How dare we come in, anyone over 30. Not only can’t be trusted, can’t be counted upon to be, sort of, coherent.”
Or what about this, “They were raised by doting parents who told them they are special, played in little leagues with no winners or losers, or all winners. They are laden with trophies just for participating and they think your business-as-usual ethic is for the birds. And if you persist in the belief you can, take your job and shove it.”
I do admit, I’ve watched it a few times, but I just find it incredible that our generation is looked at in this way because we love to multitask and text message. Technophobes drive me nuts. But at the same time, it brings up a few good points- that companies need to adapt to new generations coming through. And that we need to be flexible too. It also proves that you need to find a culture that matches your personality- somewhere that you will fit in.
It reminds me of that time when my dad got my text messaging bill and brought it to the golf course to tell his buddies and simply said to me, “just stop that text messaging business.”
I respectfully declined.
It’s funny – seeing as I’m on the cusp of the Millenial generation but tier more toward my younger peers – how I can see the difference in people my age versus just a few years older than me.
At work in the last week or so – I’ve created a new blog, updated my Facebook 10 times a day, left early to go to Yoga (funny that they used that as an example), and did a billion other “personal” things – ALL while being one of the most productive people in the office.
I look at the people there – even the ones slightly older – and laugh at their inability to really multi-task. We are a different breed. I don’t know about the spoiled nature – although I can see it somewhat – but all I do know is that the younger work force is something that corporations really have to learn to handle. They’ll understand sooner or later….like when I’m CEO on Friday.
…..I also find it funny that since I commented, you’ve responded by texting me.
